Despite being an artist my whole life, my love of comics didn't begin until I was 15...in 1989. That's right, I came into comics in time to enjoy Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld, and Erik Larson while they were at Marvel. It was a glorious time, and I got to watch a group of artist/storytellers grab fate by the nuts and twist until the universe gave in. Forming Image Comics was a bold move back then. More common now. But it taught me two valuable lessons: 1) There's no reason you can't publish your own books, and 2) big boobs sell comics, but they have nothing to do with telling a good story.

Now, 30+ years later, I've come to the point in my own life where I'm done waiting for some savvy comic book publisher to discover my novels and realize they were meant to be comics, and movies! Instead, I'm saying what I imagine those Image guys said after meeting together: "Fuck it, I'll do it myself!" I'd already started Breakneck Media, my novel imprint, so Breakneck Comics was the obvious choice.

Once I decided to go for it, I was all in and REALLY going for it. I decided that five books would be a good number to start with. Not five issues. Five different titles. Each would be a four-issue standalone story that would be released first as issues and then as a trade. Ambitious? Yes. Stupid? We'll see. Worth the risk? Absolutely. I'm all about taking risks on creative projects. I've been doing it with my weird novels for 20 years. This is really just more of the same for me, but with badass collaborators.

I banged out the scripts while searching for artists and colorists. As each script was finished, I was lucky enough to find the perfect art team for each. Without any idea of how we were going to publish the books, I hired the art teams and we got to work. We've been packaging all five books, working toward having them all complete in early 2025. After that, they'll be published monthly, one at a time. By the time we reach the ends of those five books, I hope to have more comics on the way!

While assembling my artist team of comic avengers, I was thinking about which publishers might work. I wanted someone well known for publishing original comics and for being good to work with. I talked to the amazing Kyle at Jetpack Comics, and he gave me the down-low on a few choices. One of them was Vault. I already had some of the titles, and started looking into what they might be looking for. That's when I noticed an author buddy had recently scored a deal with them. He connected us, and the already completed pages and scripts quickly won them over. So now, Breakneck Comics is partnered with Vault--Breakneck handling creative production and Vault covering the less fun aspects of comic book publishing. And I am THRILLED to be working with them.

I'm proud of the amazing work the art teams are doing. They are bringing these stories to life in ways that are probably going to get them all hired by the heavy hitters. Can't wait to share their work, and these bananas stories with the world. The next two years are going to be sick. Thanks for checking out Breakneck Comics, and I hope you stick around for the ride!
